How to Prevent Sea Sickness
August 6, 2024 12:25 pm Published by Captain MikeAt SeaBurials.com, we always hope for the best weather and calm seas to ensure a smooth and serene experience for our clients. However, we understand that the weather doesn’t always cooperate, and we take every precaution to ensure your comfort and safety during sea burials. With thousands of persons on our boats annually, very few to none get seasick under our command.
Your Safety is Our Top Priority
Your safety is our number one priority. That’s why we use large Coast Guard Inspected vessels built to handle most of what Mother Nature has to offer in Southeast Florida. These vessels provide stability and safety, even in less-than-ideal weather conditions, ensuring a secure environment for your sea burial ceremony.
Our vessels also include a clean cabin with air-conditioning which is very rare in our industry. We want families aboard our vessels to feel comfortable at all times.
If you are prone to sea sickness, here are a few recommendations to help you have a more comfortable experience:
- Medications: We recommend taking a dose of Dramamine the night before your trip and another dose one hour before departure. This can help prevent sea sickness and ensure you can fully participate in the ceremony.
- Ceremony Duration: Please note that our sea burial ceremony lasts 90 minutes, with much of this time spent in protected waters. Our experienced captain will speed up the offshore portion of the ceremony if needed, giving you more time with your family in calmer, protected waters.
General Tips for Preventing Sea Sickness
- Stay Out of the Cabin: If you start to feel queasy, it's best to stay on deck where you can get fresh air and have a clear view of the horizon.
- Focus on the Horizon: Keeping your eyes on a fixed point on the horizon can help your body adjust to the motion of the boat.
- Avoid Greasy Foods: Before your trip, avoid eating greasy or heavy foods. Instead, opt for light, bland meals that are easier on your stomach.
Alternatives for Those Uncomfortable on Boats
- If you are not comfortable on boats but still want to honor your loved one's wishes for a sea burial, consider our "Unattended Package." With this option, you provide us with the ashes, and we will take them 3 miles offshore. We will take two pictures for proof of service and provide you with an official certificate, including the coordinates where the ashes were scattered.
- Remember, the more time you spend on the water, the less likely you are to experience motion sickness. Your body can adapt to the motion over time, making future trips more enjoyable. At SeaBurials.com, we are committed to providing a respectful and dignified farewell for your loved ones, ensuring your comfort and safety every step of the way.
